According to the World Health Organisation, road traffic crashes are now the second biggest killer in the world after AIDS. More than 1.25 million people die on the world’s roads every year. In the time it takes you to read this paragraph, two more people will have died and 35 will have been seriously injured.

Road safety is not a national problem – it is an international problem. IVV asks the question: what are the world’s governments doing to address this global catastrophe?

Safex – organised by road safety experts IVV and sponsored by the United Kingdom’s professional trade association the Driving Instructors Association (DIA) – is the only world road safety conference to target driver trainers and driver education and provide a truly international perspective to the issues involved in reducing the number of deaths on the world’s roads.

Safex is the IVV’s world conference, normally held every two years, which brings together academics, politicians, key researchers and road safety practitioners from around the world.

Most recently, in Croatia in 2004, Dubai in 2006 and London in 2008, the world’s leading experts in road safety debated different approaches to tackling the appalling number of people killed.

Subjects covered included alcohol and drug abuse, post-test training for young drivers, eco and green driving techniques, and raising awareness and standards of driver education. International harmonisation of driver training, higher education standards for entry into the training profession, and pedestrian training and education through schools and colleges were also examined.

The next Safex – IVV driver education world conference – will be held in Kiev, Ukraine.
